Roti, Kapda, Makan aur Immunity!

July 14, 2020

The lock down has given everyone a lot of time to introspect their work life and personal health. Stocking masks, sanitisers and hand washes enough to last for months are just temporary solutions to the problem. But what do you do when your loved one’s tests positive for the virus? While we wait for the COVID19 vaccine, there may be many deadly viruses out there we need to protect ourselves from. You need holistic protection and hence, it’s importance that you build your immunity to protect yourselves in the longer run.

Your immune system is a system made up of cells, tissues and organs that work together in unison to protect you from infections and pathogens. It works 24/7 and defends your body when a virus attacks you. Building your immune system is definitely not about popping a pill every day for a month, it requires commitment to a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition. Since the immune system is a not a single organ, there also isn’t a single food that you can eat to better your immune system. But that does not mean that it is a difficult process. The correct changes can help you go a long way!

Nutrition:

Nutrients like proteins, fats, fibre, vitamin A, B6, B12, C, D, E, B6, folate, and minerals like zinc, iron, selenium, copper, magnesium are particularly important in boosting the immune system. Make sure you get these through your regular diet and other food products as even marginal deficiencies in certain nutrients have been shown to impair the immune system! Vegetarianism and veganism diets are usually high in carbs but low in quality protein and iron. Hence, including it consciously through food sources becomes a priority. You can include eggs, milk, soya and the superfood Amaranth (Rajgira) which are all quality proteins ! Amaranth is the only grain which has vitamin C, and this gives it an immunity boosting edge!

Lifestyle:

Some lifestyle changes you should adopt for boosting your immunity –

Quality and regular sleep

Good digestion

Manage stress

Regular exercise and yoga

Avoid processed and refined foods

Avoid excess alcohol and smoking

Research says that people with a weaker immune system or people suffering from breathing problems, diabetes, hypertension are at a much greater risk of getting infected by the virus.

In the race for being productive in this quarantine when everyone trying to learn new things, whether it is baking cakes for no occasion, learning to play the guitar or just reading a new book, you need to make your health a priority. Start working on your immune system NOW!
