In a world where size and beauty are given utmost importance instead of a healthy body and good mental health, people generally lean towards practices that promise quick results – be it due to pressure or just our brains. In a US reality show called the ‘World’s Biggest Loser’, 14 participants over a duration of 30 weeks ended up losing an average of 125 kgs each. Amazed? The interesting part is that when they were interviewed for a study by the National Institutes of Health, 6 months after the show ended, it was found that most of them, despite following the exercise and diet plan, gained most of their weight back!
Around 85% of people with obesity who lose
weight rapidly, return to or exceed their initial weight within a few years!
What are the problems with FAD diets?
As appealing as it might sound, these FAD diets that might seem like a game changer to you can actually end up making things a lot worse than better. They might make you lose a lot of weight quickly but also your immunity and strength. You are more vulnerable to conditions like diabetes , heart diseases , constipation , chronic illnesses etc. Also -
Losing excess weight in a very short span of time makes you lose a large amount of water that can lead to dehydration which in turn causes serious health problems.
Every person requires to stay healthy. When that is taken away from it, the body starts to feel weak.
Can lead to diarrhea and severe constipation. Both of these issues can be chronic and life threatening.
Inadequate amount of nutrients can cause headaches, reduce concentration and focus affecting all of the other life activities and causing serious damage.
What is the solution?
1. Mindful eating:
Mindful eating is when you pay attention to whether a meal was enjoyable and whether it sustained you for the next few hours. A balanced diet containing all the nutrients and calories as required will ensure you lose weight, are energized and are free from any health conditions. Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean giving up all the foods you love. It’s all about making smart choices to build an overall healthy lifestyle plan. Portion control is very important!
2. Lifestyle changes:
“Your body is a temple and only you have to live in it. Ensure that you take care of it and not set unrealistic expectations.”
The best way to find what is best for you and learn the tricks of the trade is to visit a nutritionist who can come up with a tailor-made diet plan just for you. Remember, a balanced diet will not only make you feel better on the outside but also make you feel better and healthier on the inside!
